AUKUS arrangement to boost hypersonic technology development & security

The AUKUS arrangement is set to accelerate their development of hypersonic technology to strengthen the collective security of Australia, the UK, and the US, and provide them with battle-winning capabilities in the future. On the arrangement, UK defence secretary John Healey MP explained: "This landmark arrangement with our US and Australian partners demonstrates the commitment of AUKUS partners to staying at the forefront of battle-winning technology."
This work will accelerate development, testing, and evaluation of innovative hypersonic vehicles and technologies, and will become the new benchmark of collaboration between the three nations.
Hypersonic capabilities include long-range strike missiles that can be launched from land, sea, or air, and can reach speeds faster than sound.
This arrangement between the three countries will boost procurement opportunities for UK suppliers, as well as creating many more skilled jobs in the UK to support economic growth. A trilateral collaboration will further allow each nation to accelerate their development of modern technology to support military strength, a strategy only possible when working together, as each country will have access to collective resources. These include shared testing facilities and technical expertise.Â
John Healey MP has said: "By combining our expertise and resources with those of our closest allies, we are accelerating the development of crucial hypersonic capabilities."
Consequently, each nation will have the potential to defend against rapidly evolving threats, should they arise. Each partner has signed the Hypersonic Flight Test and Experimentation (HyFliTE) Project Agreement. Flight tests to be conducted under this agreement will have the space to experiment in order to allow the development of high-tech hypersonic concepts to flourish.
The agreement will work alongside existing national threats, including multiple test flights of hypersonic vehicles that can be used in a range of activities.
The AUKUS defence and security partnership will also facilitate better communication across the countries' industrial bases and will allow for smoother acquisition systems.
Including more than 90 suppliers and a commercial headroom of up to £1 billion, the Hypersonic Technologies and Capability Development Framework (HTCDF), which provided industry support to the project, offers an accelerated strategy to the market. HTCDF works across the AUKUS nations and European allies.
On national defence, defence secretary John Healey MP has said: "This work will keep us ahead of our adversaries on the battlefield, enhance our collective security and contribute to maintaining peace and stability in an increasingly complex and dangerous world."
