15 killed in New Orleans attack

15 people have been killed and at least 35 injured in an attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day.
The suspected attacker, 42-year-old US citizen, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, is believed to have driven a pick-up truck into a crowd, before exiting the vehicles and firing a weapon.
He was killed by police.
The FBI has reported that an Islamic State flag was found inside the vehicle and two improvised explosive devices were found nearby.
The FBI said it believes that other people may have been involved in the attack, which is being treated as an “act of terrorism”. It is believed others may have helped to plant explosive devices. Suspected accomplices have not yet been identified.
Questions have been asked about the New Orleans’ bollard system in the city centre. The bollards were introduced in the middle of busy pedestrian streets to prevent vehicular access. This system was in the process of being repaired ahead of the Super Bowl in February. It is not yet known what condition the bollards were in in the area where the attack happened.
On the same day, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas. The FBI is investigating whether this may also be an act of terrorism, and whether it is connected to the New Orleans attack, but this is unknown at this time. The identity of the driver in the Las Vegas incident in unknown. So far, authorities have found no evidence that this attack is related to IS.
The driver of the Las Vegas car was killed and seven people injured, when the vehicle exploded. It was filled with fuel canisters and fireworks.
